Where to go when is such an important question in travel, be it sun, ski or a certain trip you want to make sure the weather is right for what you want to do. Maybe you have set dates to go away like school holidays, knowing where to go when is key. You don’t want to plan a whale watching trip when it’s not the correct season or go to the Greeks islands when everything is closed for the season, or miss those all important northern lights.
The guide below will give you a month by month guide of where to go and hopefully give you inspiration for places you have never been to before.
January for warm destinations
Asia - Laos - Hardly any rainfall with temperature around mid twenties it’s the perfect place to explore in Luang Prabang
Asia - Thailand - East coast Phukhet, Phi Phi is in dry season and a great time to visit after the crowds of Xmas and island hop.
Asia - Vietnam - Cooler temperature and less crowds make Vietnam a great choice for exploring the length of the country
Caribbean - Grenada - Dry season makes this a great destination for chilling on the beach
Caribbean - St Lucia - Great for a dry but warm Caribbean holiday
UAE - Dubai - Only 7 hours from the UK, Dubai is an all rounder in January as the temperature is comfortable enough to sunbathe and explore
USA - Florida - Winter sun at South Beach, enough said
Tenerefe and Canaries - Close to the UK, great winter sun which also allows you to explore as it’s not too hot
Africa -Southern Serengeti - Tanzania for watching the ultimate in wildebeests and animals galore wander the great plains

Bulgaria - A cheaper option for skiing and for beginners
Slovenia - Great for skiing and a good time to go after Xmas and New Year
Switzerland - Great for snow and skiing for the whole family

Budapest - thermal baths to heat you up on a cold day
Viienna - Winter at its best and it’s also the famous ball season
USA - Colorado - Dry climate but lots of fresh dumps of snow for ski lovers
February for warm destinations
Mexico - Baja California - Great for spotting grey whales in Mexico
Africa - The Gambia - 10 hours of sunshine, low humidity and much quieter than other months
Caribbean - Dominican Republic - Dry weather and long sandy beaches to relax on
New Zealand - Wine and adventure springs to mind here with NZ in full summer swing it’s a great long haul place to visit
Cape Verde - Great for sun, surfers and kite surfers as it’s it one of the windier months but still warm
Singapore - A destination that is always hot but February is one of the drier and quieter months
Cambodia - Dry season with less humidity and Tonle sap lake is still full enough to take a trip along
Rio - Brazil - Simply for the greatest party on the planet
New Orleans - Another big, big festival to visit - Mardi Gras
Patagonia - Chile - Enough sunshine to explore and trek it’s famous Torres del Paine national park
February for cold destination
Yellowstone national park - Possible a strange choice compared to summer but the park is quiet, animals are easier to spot and there’s miles of snow shoe and cross country route
Finland - Lapland - for a better chance in seeing the Northern lights and why not do a bit of dog sledding too
Andorra - Mountains galore make this a great ski destination
Venice - Go crazy at the venice carnival or embrace the cold and enchanting canals after carnival finishes
Italy - Dolomites, busy but lots of snow and alpine activities to be had
March for warm destinations
Jordan - Not too hot, not too cold, this is a great time of year to visit Petra and the dead sea
Sapa - Vietnam - North Vietnam’s hill country is dry at this time of year so great for hiking in lush paddy fields and hills.
Gran Canaria, just starting to heat up and a great time when it’s less crowded
Egypt - The Nile - The busier months have past so a Nile cruise with spring warmth and cool winds make this time of year much more pleasant
Maldives, dry season when rain and humidity are low, this popular destination has so many islands to choose from.
Chile - Great for trekking, vineyards with not as many tourists
Iguazu falls - At their fullest this time of year. The spectacular falls are very dramatic at this time of the year
Costa Rica - Explore forests, rivers, volcanoes and more in March and the weather drier
Paphos - Cyprus, just starting to warm up, it’s quiet but still sunny
March for cold destination

Netherlands, not warm but you do get to visit in Tulip season which runs from the end of March until May
Japan - It’s officially cherry blossom season in Tokyo's, Kyoto and Osaka. A popular but stunning country to visit at this time of year
Madrid - Spain, just coming out of winter, Madrid and it’s sights start hotting up for a lovely mini break
North Wales -Outdoor activities, daffodils and spring lambs
Tyrol - Austria - Great for late skiing in the highest parts of this region
